Students in the Amsterdam Business School’s (ABS) Honours Programme Sustainability (HPS) recently collaborated in a project with the UvA’s Faculty of Science. This past December, HPS students presented their insights to help sustainable startups emerging from the UvA Science Park.

The HPS is a programme which selects annually 25 MSc Business Administration students with a record of academic achievement, a passion for sustainability, and a strong drive to make a difference in the business world. The students take a dedicated and highly interactive 15 EC programme on top of their regular studies.

Combining business, sustainability and science

As part of the 'Sustainability, Circularity and Business' course, student teams worked with 5 startups and scaleups that have emerged from Science Park: Eddytec, Lumetallix, NanoHybrids, Solarfoil, and Voyex. The topic areas covered by the collaborative projects included circular business models with algae, making lead pollution visible, the sustainable import of hydrogen, sustainable aviation and maintenance, and the sustainability and recycling of nanoparticles. Students delivered compelling presentations on innovative and complex scientific ideas. Their presentations also promoted business thinking in science-based ventures.

The HPS co-directors Michelle Westermann-Behaylo and Arno Kourula were assisted by Dr Chris Slootweg of the UvA’s Faculty of Science. Slootweg played a key role in organising the project and mentoring the student teams. Further information about the project can be obtained by emailing the co-directors.
