Akua Koranteng (MIF, 2008) held an undergraduate degree in Economics and Information Systems as well as an honours degree in Economics before specializing in Real Estate Finance during her time at the Master of International Finance programme at the Amsterdam Business School. She is currently the Executive Head of the Gauteng region for the Equites Property Fund (equites.co.za).

How did your interest in real estate start?

Real Estate spans across my entire 18 year working career; from banking, to consulting, to developments to various board representations to my current position at Equites Property Fund. I don't see myself doing anything else really!

How do you look back on your MIF at the Amsterdam Business School?

The MIF at ABS helped reinforce what I already knew practically, from a theoretical perspective. We were exposed to great minds the likes of the late Simon Benninga, who broadened our perspective on financial modelling. Although I graduated from the programme 12 years ago, I often go back to my notes and textbooks when a quick refresher is required. (Yes, I am good at looking after my most treasured academic possessions...)

What was the biggest challenge in your career and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge in my career (back then and at the age of 26) was breaking the barrier required to transition from being a property finance analyst to being a property finance transactor. I overcame this by applying for and completing the MIF programme. Shortly after graduating the MIF, I transitioned from being a property finance analyst to being a property finance transactor.

What do you consider your career highlight?

I have a few career highlights. Currently, I’d say that I like to see people grow and reach their full potential from a value-add and career growth perspective. My current position at Equites Property Fund, combined with my 18 years of expertise in the real estate sector, is an enabler for this.

You are co-founder of 100ABC, a membership-based NGO that raised funds for community-based NGOs focused on supporting children through education. What inspired you to become active in philanthropy?

My parents are philanthropists, my grandparents were philanthropists (albeit executed by different means). I come from a family of givers at heart, so to ignore this calling would be a huge disservice to humanity. 100ABC was founded in the year 2010 and currently provides financial aid for the education of less privileged kids in South Africa, thus breaking down the barriers to education for kids growing up in less privileged communities in South Africa.

What does the future look like in your career?

Your guess is as good as mine! For now, I am enjoying the opportunity to enhance my mind, to engage with brilliant minds, and to play my part in ensuring that Equites Property Fund remains at the forefront of excellence.
