A team of 4 Bachelor’s students from UvA Economics and Business (EB) represented the university at the Babeș-Bolyai University International Case Competition in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The team came in 2nd place overall during the event held from 14 to 20 September.

Strong performance across cases

The UvA team—Finn Lewis, Stephanye Schäfer, Pola Machónska and Philipp Greiner—secured second place overall, after winning their division in both the 6-hour and 24-hour cases. They finished just behind IE University Madrid, with the University of Alberta taking third place in a field of 12 international universities.

The competition is part of the Case Club within the Sefa student association, supported by Professor Hans Borgman as faculty advisor. This result follows another strong performance earlier this year, when another UvA EB team achieved second place at an international case competition in Hong Kong.

Tackling real-world challenges

During the competition, the students worked on two cases for companies in Romania:

  • RIVUS (6-hour case): an ambitious mixed-use project aiming to increase inclusivity. The UvA team focused on broadening inclusivity beyond physical disabilities, addressing unseen and neurological disabilities.
  • MOL Romania (24-hour case): a major gas station network seeking to enhance its value proposition and customer experience. The team proposed integrating AI technology, improving convenience, and creating a marketing strategy to better engage younger customers.
