Summary

Digital transformation has become a cornerstone in strategy making. Pre-digital firms recognise the potential to transform their operations, achieve operational excellence and exploit the benefits of new, digital technologies. However, from an academic point, we still know very little about how the digital transformation process unfolds in practice. It remains to be explored how we can operationalise digital transformation; and how firms can align their IT and business strategies during digital transformation journeys.

In this research, a multi-method approach is chosen. Specifically, we analyse data from the Dutch Innovation Monitor to examine the contextual antecedents and strategic outcomes of digital transformation. We complement these findings through in-depth case studies and build an empirically grounded framework of digital transformation.
