For whom?

Advance your financial career with a Finance module by learning more about a specific part of finance or add new skills to your CV. Each module will give you a greater understanding of themes such as corporate finance, asset management, banking, quantitative finance, financial technology or new paradigms in the industry. All classes are on-campus, so you need to have a valid visa for the Netherlands to be able to attend.

Education points for professionals with additional finance qualifications
  • Certificate

    ach participant who passes the exam with a sufficient grade will receive a certificate. Participants who wish to complete the full Master's in International Finance degree should note that Finance modules credits are valid for 5 years.

  • CFA members: Continuing Education (CE) points

    CFA Society Netherlands has determined that completing a module qualifies you for 18 CE credit hours under the guidelines of the CFA Institute Continuing Education Program. CFA members, please log in directly on the CFA pages to record credits towards your continuing education.

     

  • RA, RC, RE: Permanent Education (PE) hours

    For accountants and controllers, a total of 18 PE hours can be earned by taking a Finance module. Please indicate on the registration form if you are an RA, RC or RE.

Discover the Finance Modules

Finance modules typically span 8 weeks. Most modules include 6 evening lectures, 1 study week and 1 exam week. We offer 16 different modules in 5 areas of finance.

New Paradigms in the Finance Industry
  • Behavioural Finance

    The course consists of 3 main building blocks: non-standard preferences, non-standard beliefs and inattention. For each of these building blocks, the lectures will describe the motivating evidence from psychology, explain how it impacts financial decision-making, discuss supporting empirical evidence, and provide practical implications.

    • Assessment: 2 take-home assignments and written exam
  • Fintech Ventures

    This course course will take you through the key principles, behaviours, tools and frameworks that enable organisations to capture the opportunity of digital initiatives such as fintech, blockchain, internet of things, etc.

    • Lectures: April-May: once a week on Tuesdays.
    • First class: 1 April 2025

    • Assessment: Team project (homework assignments and pitch out) and individual paper
Technology in Finance
  • Data Analytics and Quantitative Trading

    This course teaches how to apply computing technology to financial trading strategies. You will gain insights into how financial trading strategies depend on relationships between different securities’ prices, or between prices and firm characteristics.

    • Assessment: Homework assignments and individual take-home assignment
  • Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Finance

    This course deals with the opportunities and limitations of the current state-of-the-art in machine learning and AI technologies, and how they relate to potential future applications in finance and beyond.

    Schedule in academic year 2024-2025:

    • Lectures: February-March, once a week on Tuesdays. In addition to lectures, we offer 3 (non-mandatory) tutorial sessions on Mondays
    • First class: 4 February 2025
    • Times: 18:30-22:00
    • Assessment: Individual assignment - machine learning project
  • Fintech: Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies and Smart Contracts

    This course covers digital currencies, blockchains, and any threats that blockchain technology poses to incumbent businesses and their subsequent attempts to co-opt the technology into existing business models.

    • Lectures: 6 lectures between 2 June and 12 June.

  • Applied Blockchain

    This course is designed to explore and experiment with Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) and how these technologies impact financial markets and the greater financial services ecosystem.

Corporate Finance
  • Advanced Corporate Finance and Valuation

    In the first part of this course, you get an advanced treatment of corporate valuation methodology. In the second part of the course, you will review capital structure and payout policy.

  • M&A and Restructuring

    You will gain a rigorous working knowledge of key issues in corporate finance. You learn more on topics such as mergers and acquisitions, private equity, equity offerings as well as behavioural finance.

  • Financial Analysis and Valuation

    You will learn to apply conceptual aspects of financial accounting and reporting to the financial statements of real-world companies.

  • International Financial Management

    You will focus on international financial markets and selected aspects of international valuation and international corporate finance.

Asset Management
  • Investments and Algorithmic Trading

    You learn more about core financial concepts and theories related to different types of investments, and how to apply these concepts to practical problems faced by financial professionals.

  • Financial Derivatives

    You will get the necessary skills to design, value, and manage risks using derivatives contracts.

  • Advanced Asset Management

    You learn how to bridge the gap between the Investments and Algorithmic Trading course and today’s investment practices, both at the level of households and at the level of institutional investors.

Banking and Quantitative Finance
  • Financial Econometrics

    You will develop skills for the econometric analysis of macroeconomic and financial data, with a particular emphasis on regression theory and time series analysis.

  • Financial Modelling

    You will concentrate on building financial models for corporate finance, investments, portfolios and corporate valuation.

    • Lectures: February-March, three consecutive weekends on Saturday and Sundays.
    • First class: 15 February
    • Times: 10:00-14:00
    • Assessment: Group assignments and individual written exam.
  • Risk Management

    You get an overview of key issues in financial risk management. You are trained in evaluating, measuring and managing a range of financial risks to which companies are exposed.

Admission requirements

  • You hold a recognised Bachelor's or Master's university degree in a related field (e.g. finance, business administration, economics, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, law).
  • You have a minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience in the financial field.
  • All classes are on-campus, so you need to have a valid visa for the Netherlands to be able to attend.

Pre-course training

If you don’t hold a relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree from a research University and/or you don’t have relevant work experience in the financial field, you are required to complete the pre-course training before you apply. The tuition fee for this online self-study training is €1,000.

Application deadlines

You can apply until 2 weeks before the start date of any Finance Module at the latest. Please note that the number of places per module is limited.

After receiving your completed application form, we will evaluate your profile and contact you for a telephone or personal consult.

Fees and discounts

If you register for a Finance module for the first time, the fee is €3,000. If you are a returning module student, UvA alumnus or CFA/CAIA member, the fee is €2,700 per module. If you have completed our MIF programme or one of the MBAs, we will automatically apply the MIF/MBA alumni rate of €750 per module.

The fee covers the Finance module, use of UvA facilities, university registration, materials and/or case studies provided by lecturers, and examination fees. The fee does not cover textbooks (if required).

Tuition fees are VAT exempt and deductible from your income tax if you live and work in The Netherlands. For more information on tax deductions, please check the Dutch Taxation Office’s website.
