Management Science is a leading academic journal classified as an A+ journal at the UvA. Published by INFORMS since 1954, it features on the FT50 and UTD24 lists of top journals. It publishes research in finance, accounting, operations, marketing, strategy and economics. A distinctive feature of the journal is that it brings these disciplines together.

How people make decisions

Smeets works within the journal’s Behavioral Economics and Decision Analysis department. This department focuses on research into how people make decisions. How do investors deal with risk, for example? Why do people donate to charity? And how does overconfidence influence their choices? Researchers often explore these questions through laboratory or field experiments.

Contributing to new research

As an associate editor, Smeets selects suitable reviewers: fellow researchers who assess a submitted article. He reads their reports and the article itself. He then advises the department editor on whether to reject the article, request revisions or accept it.

Smeets: ‘I enjoy contributing to the field in this way. You are among the first to see what new research is coming up. And you help authors improve their work.’
