Fellow actuaries and a jury of experts have selected MSc Actuarial Science alumnus Richard Plat as 2019 Actuary of the Year. The announcement was made on Actuaris Day 2019 which took place on 26 September.

During the award ceremony, the jury spoke about Plat’s in-depth and extensive knowledge of the profession and the major impact of his research and publications, both in the Netherlands and internationally. Another quality praised by the jury was the applicability of his work. One of things Plat introduced was a mortality model that was hailed as the ‘most suitable model’ in the US and is now being used in more than 10 countries, including Sweden, Finland and India.

Significant contributions

The alumnus has made significant contributions to the actuarial profession. In 2011, he won the Johan de Witt Award together with Katrien Antonio for the article Micro-levels Stochastic Loss Reserving. He also makes efforts through writing articles and organising workshops to encourage fellow actuaries to use Data Science and Machine Learning. In addition to these activities, he is featured as a speaker at numerous seminars and he is a reviewer in leading professional journals and serves as a jury member fort he Johan de Witt Award.
