Law & Finance (LLM)

In September 2018, the Amsterdam Law School and the Amsterdam Business School launched the first year of a new Master’s programme in Law & Finance (LLM). The growing importance of finance to the global economy has made it increasingly important that lawyers have a good grasp of financial economics. According to both a Harvard Law School survey and the industry leaders we spoke to during the design phase and development of this programme, law students with extensive knowledge of Corporate Finance, Accounting, and Financial Statement Analysis have a clear advantage in the jobs market over students without that knowledge and those skills.

Admission

The programme at a glance

In this Master’s programme, the Amsterdam Law School and the Amsterdam Business School join forces to offer a challenging curriculum the contents of which was chosen in close consultation with major jobs market representatives.

The main objective of the programme is to educate students in both Law and Finance – in accordance with the demands pointed out by industry leaders. The combination provides our graduates with a head start in the jobs market over other students.

Graduates with this Master’s will typically find employment as:

  • Lawyers, in the corporate/transactional and financial practices and departments of law firms
  • Legal and compliance experts in the financial industry (which includes banks, insurance companies and pension funds)
  • Legal Counsel for in-house legal departments
  • Legal and compliance officers for financial supervisory authorities
  • Consultants in positions requiring legal and financial knowledge
  • Academic researchers in law and finance
  • or in similar jobs that require a combination of legal and finance knowledge

The Master’s is a one-year selective programme open to both Dutch and international students  (taught in English) that culminates in an LLM issued by the Amsterdam Law School. It paves the way for admission to the Dutch bar and judiciary (the so-called ‘civiel effect’ of the Master) provided certain additional criteria are met (see Application and admission requirements further on).
