Amsterdam Data Science Minor (in English)
The new minor Amsterdam Data Science will start in September 2017! During this minor you will learn how to carry out a data science project from begin to end.
What is Data Science?
Data Science is discovering hidden patterns in large amounts of data, using computers, brain power and the wealth of data. Many innovations heavily rely on Data Science: Self-driving cars; Analysing text, images and human behaviour for businesses; Targeted advertising; Sports analytics; Recommendation engines.
What will you learn in this Minor?
You will learn to carry out a Data Science project from beginning to end. That involves: Asking the right (research) question(s), data collection and cleaning, data management and organisation, modelling, communication and visualisation, and implementation.
This Minor will make you eligible for two UvA Master's programmes:
- Information Studies: The ‘Data Science’ track teaches you to apply Data Science in a wide range of areas.
- Business Administration: The ‘Digital Business’ track teaches you to apply Data Science in a commercial/business context (additional requirements also apply).
This Minor will give you excellent job prospects. McKinsey have projected a shortfall of 190,000 Data Scientists by 2018!
Successful completion of the first year of a Bachelor's programme is required for participation in this Minor. In addition, the following knowledge is assumed: Basic Python and Econometrics & Statistics knowledge (if this is lacking, self-study is required).
Students taking this Minor typically follow a Bachelor's programme in: Actuarial Sciences, Business, Communication Sciences, Econometrics, Economics, Psychology, STEM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). The Minor is also open to other students, provided they have an affinity with quantitative methods.
Required prior knowledge:
It is assumed that you have affinity with or interest in quantitative methods and basic knowledge of Python and Statistics. Self-study before starting the minor will be required in case of deficiencies in:
- Econometrics and Statistics
The links to the e-modules of these topics will be published in the Course Catalogue of the minor.
The Minor is comprised of the following courses (more information in the course catalogue):
- Databases & Data Visualisation (6 EC)
- Data Wrangling (6 EC)
- Algorithms and Data Structures in Python (6 EC)
- Machine Learning (6 EC)
- Text Retrieval and Mining (3 EC)
- Law and Ethics (3 EC)
The descriptions of the course will be included in the Course Catalogue of the minor.
In the Course Catalogue you will find instructions on how to register for this minor. After you are admitted to the minor, the Student Administration will register you for your courses.
